I have been a teacher of preschool, K, 2, 4, and high school. I have been a K-6 counselor for 16 years and a co-principal for 1 year. I was a consultant for Responsive Classroom for 15 years. I have taught graduate classes for St. Michael's College and been a mediator for Vermont Family Court. I have contracted as an independent consultant, facilitator and educator, working with non-profits, early childhood educators, schools, communities and individuals. Since 2019, I have led the work to establish early childhood education as a recognized profession in Vermont, in which I have used my skills in leadership development, collaborative decision-making, effective communication, and facilitating complex systems change.

Work Experience

About Susan Titterton
With over thirty years as an educator, Susan understands education deeply and from multiple perspectives - as a student, teacher, counselor, principal, parent, and board member. During her career in Vermont, she has taught every age from three-year-olds to adults. Susan has expertise in child development, social-emotional learning, bullying prevention, positive school climate, strength-based planning, and the facilitation of productive dialogue.

Following 16 years as a Responsive Classroom consultant and program developer, Susan worked with schools, organizations and individuals through her independent practice, Susan Titterton Consulting & Mediation, LLC. An enthusiast and curious learner, Susan earned her second masters degree in Mediation and Applied Conflict Studies in 2012 from the Woodbury Institute at Champlain College.

Since 2019, Susan has led the grassroots effort to establish early childhood education as a recognized profession in Vermont, in which she used her skills in leadership development, collaborative decision-making, group facilitation, presentation design and delivery, and research in a complex systems change process. As of 2025, a bill establishing ECE as a recognized profession has passed the Vermont Senate and will begin making its way through the House.
