I believe in using the life and work experiences of the adults I'm working with as material to relate the new concepts to. I believe it's important to emphasize the practical side of the material for adults so they will be able to apply what they are learning. It needs to be useful, and it's my job as instructor to present the material in such a way as to encourage adults to make those connections for themselves. I find it's important to check-in with adult learners at the beginning of a workshop in order to hear about expectations. It's been my experience that many folks come in with expectations and they don't always "jive" with what's on the agenda, yet, it's not difficult to incorporate into the teaching what folks have come to learn, and also what they have come to share. |
